Things kick off as you step into a fancy pair of vampire shoes and head on down to the Camarilla, an upscale vampire court seated in the heart of Boston. With all of that working against it, you’d be mortally forgiven for walking out of Swansong’s dark, hazy alcove before its final embrace. Meanwhile, its many obtuse puzzles are often too clumsily explained. It’s rich with decisions that should feel meaningful in theory, but its emotional moments exist in service to a broader story with no clue what to do with them. ![]() ![]() That’s the pedigree that Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong tries to live up to, but it struggles to piece its own identity as a detective RPG together until the very end. The three investigate conspiracies in Boston following a shootout, starting with who ordered the attack and why.Imagine compacting the gothic open world of 2004’s Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines into an RPG that is far slower and more deliberate in its execution, dousing it with the same variety of linear, character-driven storytelling made popular in Telltale’s The Walking Dead series, then finally handing it off to receive one last blood injection from the legendary puzzle game Myst. The story follows three vampires, each about a hundred years old, from different vampire clans with differing views on the Camarilla’s rule: Galeb, an intimidating man of clan Ventrue Emem, a “seductive Amazon” of clan Toreador and Leysha of clan Malkavian, who depends on a blood concoction. Because the player characters often are surrounded by humans, the player needs to be careful about when and where they choose to use supernatural abilities, to avoid revealing their characters’ vampiric nature. The player can customize the characters by choosing to upgrade their disciplines and character statistics to suit their preferred playstyle this influences character interaction and skills used while exploring the game world, such as picking locks and hacking computer terminals. Vampire: The Masquerade Swansong is a narrative-driven, single-player role-playing video game in which the player controls three vampires with different vampiric disciplines (abilities), switching between them over the course of the game.
